* Make sure you have full travel health insurance coverage for both illness and injury.
* Carry proof of your meds for any prescription drugs.
* Remember your anti-malarial medication, if prescribed.
* Always use a condom if you have sex with someone you meet while travelling.
* Never share needles to inject intravenous drugs.
* Remember that swimming in some fresh water poses risks, including exposure to parasites.
* Trust your instincts, do not walk or swim alone.
* Be sure to drink plenty of liquids to prevent dehydration.
* Wash your hands often.
* Remember to take precautions against insects. Use a sunblock with a minimum SPF of 15.
* Avoid getting a a tatoo or piercing on your trip.
* Be prepared to acclimatize jet lag, altitude sickness, culture shock and the effects of heat.
* Acclimatize for climers climb high sleep low.
* Be aware of your surroundings.
Very Important: See your health care provider immediately if you become ill with fever within a year (especially within three months) of your return to Canada from an area known to have malaria.
