What Vaccines Do You Need for Nursing and Healthcare Programs in Edmonton?
If you’re starting a nursing or healthcare program in Edmonton—like at NorQuest, MacEwan, NAIT, or the University of Alberta—congrats! You’re entering an amazing (and demanding) field. One thing you might not have expected? A long list of immunizations you need to complete before you even set foot in a clinical setting.
It can feel overwhelming, especially if you’ve never had to track your vaccine history before. That’s why we’ve created this guide—to help you figure out what’s required, what to bring, and where to go to get it all done (hint: Atlas Immunization can help).
Why Do Health Care Students Need Vaccines?
When you're training in healthcare, you're not just learning in a classroom—you’re also working hands-on with patients during clinical placements. To protect vulnerable patients (and yourself), most schools require proof of certain vaccines before you’re allowed to start those placements.
It’s not just a recommendation—it’s a non-negotiable part of your program requirements.
What’s the Deal with TB Skin Testing?
One part that trips a lot of students up is the TB skin test. Some schools require a 1-step test, others need a 2-step (which means you’ll need to return twice in the same week). Don’t leave this to the last minute—it’s time-sensitive and you won’t be able to complete your paperwork without it.
At Atlas Immunization, we offer both 1-step and 2-step TB skin tests in our Edmonton clinic, and we’ll help make sure you’re doing the right one for your school.
So, what is a TB Skin Test?
A Tuberculin Skin Test (TST) involves a tiny injection under the skin of your forearm. We check the area 48–72 hours later to see if there’s a reaction. It doesn’t diagnose TB but tells us if you've been exposed in the past.
1-Step vs. 2-Step?
1-Step TB Test = You come in once, then return 2–3 days later
2-Step TB Test = You do the process twice within 7–21 days
First test: Day 1 + return on Day 3
Second test: One week later + return again 2–3 days after
Required for most nursing schools if this is your first TB test
Timing Tip:
Book at least 3–4 weeks before your form is due to allow time for:
TB testing (2 visits minimum)
Bloodwork for serology (if needed)
Booster doses (some vaccines need spacing between doses)
What are some other common Vaccines Required for Healthcare and Nursing Programs
Requirements vary slightly by school, but these are the most commonly required:
Hepatitis B
Usually a series of 3 vaccines over 6 months
Schools often require serology (a blood test) to prove immunity
If you’ve never had this or aren’t sure, you can start the series at Atlas
MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella)
Childhood vaccine—many people had this as babies
If your records are missing, a booster or serology may be required
Varicella (Chickenpox)
Required even if you had chickenpox as a child—verbal history alone is not accepted
You’ll need a vaccine or blood test to prove immunity
Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis)
Must be within the last 10 years
Easily boosted with a single injection if expired
Influenza (Flu shot)
Required during flu season (October–March)
Not usually needed for initial clearance but expected before clinicals begin
COVID-19 (Sometimes Required)
Some programs or placements still require proof of COVID vaccination
Check with your school’s most up-to-date policy
Proof Format
Most programs (like NorQuest or NAIT) require official forms filled out and signed by a healthcare provider, along with copies of vaccine records. Atlas can complete these during your visit.
