Who Needs a TB Skin Test?
A TB skin test (also called a TST) is commonly required for:
Nursing and healthcare students
Clinical placements and practicums
Healthcare, childcare, and education workers
Employment or volunteer screening
School or regulatory body requirements
Many post-secondary programs and employers require TB testing before you’re allowed to start, so booking early is essential.
What Is a TB Skin Test?
A TB skin test checks whether your body has been exposed to tuberculosis in the past.
The test involves:
A small injection just under the skin of your forearm
A follow-up visit 48–72 hours later to read the result
It’s a quick, safe test performed by trained nurses and is widely accepted by schools and employers across Alberta and Canada.
1-Step vs 2-Step TB Skin Test
Most schools require a 1-step TB skin test, but some programs ask for a 2-step TB test, especially if you’ve never had TB testing before.
1-Step TB Test:
Two visits (injection + reading)2-Step TB Test:
Four visits total (two injections, each followed by a reading one week apart)
If you’re unsure which one your school or employer needs, we can review your forms and help you choose the correct option.
Can TB Testing Be Done With Other Vaccines or Tests?
Yes — in many cases, your TB skin test can be coordinated with:
Serology (titre testing)
Required vaccines or boosters
School or employment documentation
However, TB testing must follow specific timing rules if live vaccines (such as MMR or Varicella) are needed. Our nurses will help schedule everything correctly so nothing delays your clearance.
How Long Does a TB Skin Test Take?
Timing is one of the most common issues students run into.
Each TB test requires a return visit within 48–72 hours
Missing the reading window means the test must be repeated
Some schools require TB testing to be completed weeks before deadlines
👉 We recommend booking your TB skin test at least 4–6 weeks before your due date, especially if a 2-step test or additional vaccines are required.
