Starting a Program in Healthcare or Childcare? Here’s What You’ll Need

Whether you're starting nursing, health care aide, early childhood education, or other clinical-based programs, schools across Canada will ask for proof of immunization, a TB skin test in Edmonton, and often, bloodwork (serology) to confirm immunity.

The Complete Student Vaccine Checklist

  • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella)

  • Varicella (Chickenpox)

  • Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis)

  • Polio (some placements)

  • Hepatitis B + Serology

  • Influenza (seasonal)

  • COVID-19 (varies)

  • 1-step or 2-step TB Skin Test (based on school form)

  • Chest X-ray (only if TB positive)

  • Bloodwork/Titres for immunity (MMR, Varicella, Hep B)

What to Expect at Your Appointment

We’ll review your vaccine records and school form, complete any required bloodwork (titres), administer missing vaccines, schedule your TB test if needed, and complete the form on-site. Most appointments are efficient and student-friendly.

Tips to Make Your Appointment Go Smoothly

  • Wear a short-sleeve shirt

  • Eat and hydrate beforehand, especially if you’re a little nervous

  • Bring your school immunization form

  • Bring any past vaccine records or documentation if outside of Alberta

  • Know your deadline

Special Instructions for International Students & Permanent Residents

Many international students and newcomers to Canada come to us with vaccine records from their home countries—often in a different language.

The good news? In most cases, we can work with non-English records, as many abbreviations and vaccine names are recognized globally (e.g., “MMR,” “Hep B,” “BCG”).

However, there are some important requirements to be aware of:

✅ What We Can Accept:
- Records with clear vaccine names and dates (even if not in English)
- Abbreviations that follow WHO or global immunization standards
- Documentation that shows day, month, and year of each vaccine

❗ What Needs Translation:
- Records written in scripts or languages that do not use recognizable vaccine terms
- Documents where it’s unclear which vaccine was given
- Any record with missing dates, partial dates (e.g., just month/year), or no indication of vaccine schedule

If a translation is needed, we require it to be:
- Completed by an official or certified translator
- Include full dates (day, month, year)
- Clearly specify which vaccine was administered

No Records? No Problem.

If you don’t have records, we can order bloodwork (serology) to check for immunity or start a catch-up vaccine series. This is common for permanent residents and international students starting school in Canada.

When Should You Book Your Appointment?

We recommend booking 4–6 weeks (or more) before your due date—especially if your school requires a 2-step TB skin test, or if you need a vaccine series (such as Hepatitis B) that requires multiple doses. Booking early ensures there’s time for testing, follow-up doses, and proper documentation.

Common Delays to Avoid

  • Waiting too late to start a 2-step TB test (it takes 10–14 days)

  • Missing vaccine records and not allowing time for bloodwork

  • Not realizing your Hep B series isn't complete (requires 3 doses)

  • Forgetting to bring your school form or valid ID to the appointment
